1. What is UX?

Understanding about UX, what UX Designer do and why is UX important.

What is UX?

How do we actually define UX?

Working as a UX/UI Designer, I never fully understand the UX definition 😅… So what actually is UX?

The most important factors that Influence User Experience

Before we dive deep into UX true definition, let's learn about the importance aspect of UX.

While there might be many factors that could influence UX, I'll focus on the three most crucial ones:

  • Useful: How well a product meets user needs and solves problems.

  • Usable: The ease with which users can interact and accomplish tasks.

  • Desirable: The product’s appeal and the emotional connection it creates with users.

How do we evaluate UX in a product

We evaluate UX in a product simply by setting expectations for users and fulfilling those expectations.

Then, what is UX? 🤔

💡 UX covers the entire user journey - before (Expectation), during (Actual use), and after (Fulfilment) using a product - ensuring every aspect of usefulness, usability, and desirability is addressed.

What does UX Designer do?

Here's a fun comic from UXF that explain about this topic.

A UX Case Study on Airbnb's Business Model

Let’s examine how Airbnb integrates UX into their business model canvas:

UX contributes to 2 out of 9 elements of the business model:

  • Value Propositions: The unique benefits a product or service provides to solve a customer’s problem or fulfill a need.

  • Customer Segments: The distinct groups of people or organizations a business targets and serves.

For Airbnb, they identifies the unmet needs of their target groups - hosts and guests. They connect homeowners with renters, allowing hosts to earn income from idle properties and helping guests enjoy local experiences both in a easy and secured way.

What can we learn from this?

💡 UX isn’t just about designing a convenient interface; it’s about discovering and delivering what users truly need.

UX as a Label & Function

We are UX Designers, even though we share the same title, our workloads and responsibilities can vary significantly from company to company.

UX as a label turn out to be quite different from UX as a Function.
